40k 6th Edition Space Marines: Vulkan

Games Workshop put out a new Space Marines codex last week.  Today I started putting together some army lists and will be posting thoughts as I go.  First up: Everyone’s favorite flaming hero, Vulkan He’stan.

Vulkan

Like nearly everyone, last edition I eventually caved and started running Vulkan.  He was just too good to resist—army wide Flamer and Melta buffs, with a standard Captain stat line but a 2+/3++ save, Digital Weapons, a Relic Blade, and a Heavy Flamer and Bolt Pistol to boot.  His points in the new book remain the same, a large but not crazy 190, and all of his stats and gear are also identical.  So he’s of slightly less value given that a Salamanders army gets the Flamer buff for free, and neither buffs Thunderhammers anymore.  However, I think he still stacks up pretty solidly.  I’ve generally found Vulkan to be fairly survivable and able to go toe-to-toe with tough units, so 190 points is not unreasonable for this HQ.  The one negative I’ll say about him is that his Warlord Trait (Iron Resolve: +1 to combat resolution w/ Vulkan in the fight) is terribly underwhelming.  The whole Space Marine trait list is weak across the board, and that is not one of the stronger ones.

In any event, by way of comparison, a very similar generic captain would run like so:

  • Captain: 90 points
  • Artificier Armour: 20
  • Storm Shield: 15
  • Power Weapon: 15
  • Relic Blade: 25
  • Digital Weapons: 10

There’s no option to pick up a heavy flamer on the Captain, unfortunately.  That totals 175 points, so for 15 more Vulkan’s picking up a Heavy Flamer and buffs all Melta weapons to Master-Crafted.  So, Vulkan is probably worth it if you want to run this basic setup.  I’ve found the Heavy Flamer actually fairly useful, and the Melta buff alone could easily be worth 15 points in many armies.

My other response is that’s pretty awesome and a huge improvement in the Space Marine codex.  Generic HQs in the previous book were just slightly boring in their options, and very inefficient compared to the named heroes.  They just cost too many points for how (un-)survivable a Space Marine leader is and to miss out on the army wide buffs, previously only granted by the named HQs.  So, that’s super awesome that you can now pretty much construct the named guys out of the generic options and get the bulk of the buffs from the Chapter Tactics.  That gives a ton of options.  In this case, you could basically run Vulkan but shaving a couple points with a generic guy if you don’t need the Melta buff, or you could upgrade to the Burning Blade and/or some other Chapter Relics if you wanted to beef him out to a heavier close combat fighter.  I’m super stoked about that.

Kingbreakers

So, for now at least, I’m probably going to run Vulkan and then see how I want to tailor things tighter to my playing style.  Next up: Librarians!

The body and right arm are from the Black Reach box set Terminator Sergeant, the banner a Company Command Squad, and the left arm and bits a Dark Angels Tactical Squad+upgrade sprue.

The Terminator arm’s Storm Bolter was cut off and then I drilled out the interior of the hand to put through the pole, just some scrap tubing I had laying around.  I opted not to use the original banner pole since I’d have to cut the power armor hand off, and that pole’s pretty wide so it’d be tough to plausibly work into a hand not modeled for it.  In drilling the hand I made sure to off-center the hole so the outside fingers wouldn’t be destroyed.  As per my standard approach, I lead with a pin drill and then drilled by hand with a regular power drill bit.  The thumb of course had to be reconstructed with some greystuff.  It’s too big by scale but holds the tubing in place (assisted by some glue) and looks fine, especially given that it won’t particularly be visible.

Both arms are magnetized.  The left side’s a bit unnecessary, but I was worried about transporting with the banner permanently affixed.  In the end it was also helpful to place the arm on the body in order to cut and glue the pole at the correct height, which was a snap to do with it magnetized.

There’s just a little bit of a psychic hood started from a nub cut from a Tactical Marine shoulder pad.  I’m actually not sure I’ll build it up much more, the model has a lot going on already so it doesn’t need much visually compared to the effort building up the hood would take.

Kingbreakers Ghosts

kingbreakers-iconWalter was quite rightly giving me (friendly) flak at the tournament on Saturday for my counts-as Sternguard combi-meltas.  Between that and the great time I had, I was finally motivated yesterday to knock out some guys I’ve had kicking around for a stupid long time now in various stages of progress.  Introducing Sergeant Harmon and the Kingbreakers Ghost Squad (Sternguard):

The conception here is that Kingbreakers Sternguard are made up of the last standing survivors of other squads, nearly all of which were devastated after the fall of Forestway, let alone their ongoing campaigns against Chaos.  These marines view themselves as already dead, so they’ve painted their armor black and are even more willing than regular Kingbreakers to drop into the maw of doom, following their creed:  Without hope, without mercy, without fear.

Eventually I’m going to have ten guys in this style for a full squad of Sternguard.  There are three combi-Xs in this combat squad and there’ll be another three in the next one, a loadout I’ve been regularly running for a long time now.  Two of the combi-guns are a standard plasmagun conversion.  Sgt Harmon is rolling a Kopena-pattern combi-gun, a combination of a bolter, plasmagun, and a fuse from a Christmas tree light…  It’s not the most complex thing, but I think it looks fine in practice (there’s one or two in my army already) and it stands out a bit.

I basically always roll combi-meltas but meltas are way more precious, so the plasma look will have to do.  Anybody that has an actual problem with that, especially since I don’t mix combi-types, is probably not someone I want to play with.  I didn’t add oversize ammo clips because I couldn’t make satisfying from scratch and didn’t have enough unused storm bolters to convert from those.  One guy though is carrying a spare ammo box, and Harmon has a ton of pouches on him in traditional Kingbreakers fashion—you never know how long you’ll be in the field.

All of the arms and heads were painted separately before being attached and then washed.  This means they’re not playable while in progress, but makes a lot of the detail work easier.

The dudes were spray primed white like I always do for infantry.  The Grey Knights helmets add a really nice, mean looking flair to the guys.  They actually took a lot of time.  Originally they were going to go on some actual GK painted white, so they were built up pretty slowly in layers from a deep blue base to give a very solid white.  On these guys though they were way too clean looking so I had to wash them black.  That lost most of the blue shading, but it’s still a nice smooth white (which is tougher to get than it sounds).

The robes and top armor are just Chaos Black drybrushed pretty heavily with Codex Grey and then washed heavily with Badab Black (rest in peace!).  The wash took away the highlights a bit more than I wanted, but especially in the photos they actually come out really ghost-like.

The legs are standard Kingbreakers Hammerfall Khaki, Bleached Bone highlights, and Gryphon Sepia wash.  Arms are Ordic Olive highlighted with Snot Green (I think), washed with Thraka Green. I think they’ll fit in well with the other Kingbreakers through the common legs, arms, and shoulder pad trim (Mechrite Red, designator of Kingbreakers First Company), but the black top armor will distinguish them nicely on the table as the Sternguard.

Next up is Librarian Rorschach in Terminator Armor.  I worked out his arms this morning, he’s going to be super super sweet.  Then these guys will get their own Drop Pod in this ghost color scheme.  Somewhere along the way I should probably make or invest in a decent lightbox, there’s not been a ton of sunshine  lately, with no sign of that changing soon.

Fear the Kingbreakers!
